In some way it is the atonement holiday for Christians.
All is forgiven for just one day.
I guess it's just because we're tired about this time of year and laying down your sword for one day can't be all bad.

When you are aboard a ship at sea there is an amazing transformation that occurs.
When the land can no longer be seen you really know, that thing you are standing on is the only thing between you and death.
The sea is the most powerful force of nature. Nothing stops the sea.
The only way to survive the sea is to be watertight. Ship shape. Don't let things linger, don't ignore life. Every drop is important. Every drop you ignore floods your bilge.
Do good work. Keep an even keel. Stop sleeping in the fanroom.
